Cashew Apples
Organic
Burkina Faso
Botanically, the cashew apple is neither an apple nor a fruit. It is a thickened, fruit-like plant on which the cashew nut grows. What may seem inedible is a popular local snack. Since fresh cashew apples quickly spoil, the employees of gebana Burkina Faso cut and dry them. Cashew apples have a high tannin content – and you can taste it.
Storage & shelf life
Dried fruit can be stored at room temperature well past the best-before date in a tightly sealed container away from light. They only become slightly harder after a few months. Before using them for baking or cooking, you can soften fruit that has hardened by placing it in some hot water for a few minutes.

COULIBALY SEYDOU
FARMER FROM TAGA, BURKINA FASO
Oxen would make my work in the fields easier.
Coulibaly Seydou grows cashews and maize on onehectare of land. The farmer also breeds chickens. "I want to start breeding other animals to increase my sources of income," he says. "For example, oxen would be very useful for working in the fields." Coulibaly can't always afford to hire workers to help him. "We can only pay farm workers if the previous year's harvest was profitable. Otherwise, my family helps me."
