LEIDER MIGUEL BURBANO CALVO
FARMER FROM LA TROCHA, ALBANIA, LA VEGA, COLOMBIA
Organic: As a form of rebellion against the capitalist system, out of respect for life.
"We all live and work together, each of us contributing our skills, experience and knowledge," explains Leider Miguel Burbano Calvo. He grows 200 different types of produce on his two-hectare farm with his mother, his three siblings, his son and two nieces, including "what we call pan coger", which is cassava, bananas, beans and maize. But that's not enough for him. "My goal is to become self-sufficient in all areas. Not just in terms of food, but also hygiene, weaving with natural fibres, construction, and making furniture. To achieve this, I would like to further my popular education, expanding the Amolando Sabiduría farmers' school."

Background

We want fairer coffee
People in Europe drink more than 30 billion cups of coffee a year. Millions of family farmers grow the coffee to meet this huge demand. Far too many of these families live in abject poverty because the price of coffee is too low.
