Pistachios
Peaches from the cooperative O.P. Agritalia from the region around San Ferdinando, Apulia. If you select the first delivery in June, you will receive the early variety Sagittaria with yellow flesh. The Royal Glory variety is ripe in early to mid-July. It also has yellow flesh but is somewhat sourer in taste. Later in July comes the sweet, aromatic variety Maria Bianca with white flesh.
Storage & shelf life
Store nuts and seeds in a cool, dark place in a tightly closed container. Make sure that the container is as airtight as possible so that moisture is kept away from the nuts. You can also freeze nuts and seeds, which will extend their shelf life by several months.
RUGGERO LAPORTA
FARMER FROM TRINITAPOLI, ITALY
I discovered a natural pesticide by chance.
"While harvesting tomatoes in the garden one day, I noticed there was one type of marigold that the insects don't like," says Ruggero Laporta. "After that, I introduced the flowers into the crop rotation. This has greatly reduced the need for pesticides." He and his son Francesco grow nectarines and peaches on roughly 17 hectares of land. "Organic farming is a tradition in my family," explains Laporta. "I'm passing everything my father taught me on to my son."
