Fresh bananas from the El Oro region in southwest Ecuador. Unlike bananas from the supermarket, they come straight to your home without passing through a ripening facility. The bananas are therefore still green and can be ripened at home or cooked like a vegetable.
Use & preparation
- Use green bananas in savoury dishes: Peanut and Banana Curry, Green Banana and Black Bean Stew.
- Use ripe bananas to make delicious smoothies and if you still have some left over, you can freeze them or bake a classic banana bread.
Storage & shelf life
Bananas stay fresh for several weeks when stored in a cool place. The optimal storage
temperature is 13°Celsius, like a cool cellar. The temperature in the refrigerator is too
low for bananas and the cold may damage them. Bananas also require a certain amount of humidity. If they become too dry, they will not turn yellow and be very difficult to peel. You shouldn›t remove the plastic bag that comes with the box, as it prevents the fruit from drying out. Make sure that there is enough air circulation. Never store your bananas in an airtight container, otherwise excess moisture can accumulate, which may lead to the fruit moulding and spoiling. Open the box
regularly and make sure that there isn›t any moisture collecting in the bag.
Store the bananas you plan on eating soon loosely packed in a smaller plastic bag at room temperature. Sprinkle a little water on them to keep them from drying out and open the bag regularly to prevent moisture from accumulating. The fruit will ripen within a few days. The warmer the room temperature, the faster the bananas will ripen.
